Why doesn't our brain work when we want it to?
Yesterday I had the time but somehow I just didn't have the mojo. No matter what I did, it went wrong or worse yet just didn't happen. I ended up surfing the internet looking for ideas for bracelets to make for my first craft show the end of March. I needed something out of the ordinary, not to time consuming and what I had on hand. Is that a lot to ask? Evidently so, because even though I saw great bracelets on Pinterest I did not have the supplies on hand to even start them. Then again we all know how addictive Pinterest is and after a while I completely lost track of what I was looking for. I spent last evening looking through my Jewelry Affair and Belle Amour Jewelry publications and all I could see was necklaces.
This morning, a brand new day, and yeah! my brain is working again. It said to me, "So they are necklaces, they are nothing more than just long bracelets." How profound. Why didn't I think of that....... yesterday.
I whipped together these strands this morning, which will be the bases for 3 bracelets. I am going to add 2 or 3 strands of chain and a great clasp and Ta-Da.....I think I will have some out of the ordinary bracelets. Now I just need to hope my brain doesn't leave me again. If it does you can find me on Facebook or Pinterest.
See you there.........Ruth

The Story Behind the Talisman
I always love the books that talk about and make talismans. My first one was "Amulets and Talismans" by Robert Dancik and the second one is "A Charming Exchange" by Kelly Snelling and Ruth Rae. I am always fascinated with the creation of the project as well as the story behind it.
When the drill slipped and I made a large hole in the heart, I knew it could no longer be a pendant. The wings were on and some small gears and cogs that were there were ruined. After a couple of days I remembered the hearts that I had seen that were stitched, so I cut the heart apart and drilled holes and started to lace it up. It looked so crude and bent and scratched and I realized it reminded me of my own heart. I glued it to a ring back and I had my talisman.
Now a short story about me and why it is my talisman. In 2008 my husband died after a long battle with cancer. He was the love of my life and my best friend for 47 years and I still live in the home that we built ourselves, and raised 2 children in. It sits on 10 acres with a 2 acre lawn and 8 acres of woods, so there is lots of upkeep, inside and out. We did everything together and I always felt, just like the song, that he was the wind beneath my wings. Without him I have been lost and have had trouble finding a direction, a new experience for me. After the 3 years mourning period that everyone talks about I figured I would feel better. Realization finally came to me that I am now on my own and need to find my own way. Easier said than done, it is a work in progress.
So now I think the talisman speaks for itself, the heart is beat up and broken, has a hole in it, stitched together rather crudely, but ready to try its wings.

Who am I?
This is a question I have been asking myself quite often lately. I have never been so adrift, like a rowboat ,without any oars. From the time I was 10 years old I always knew what I wanted, where I was going and just how to get there. Here I am almost 70 years old and I do not know the answer to any of those things. I find this to be a very disturbing place to be.
I know I should probably be happy with being retired and the days belonging to me, and answering to no one. Maybe many of you envy me. BUT....this is not who I am. I am a person who is always in the tomorrow. If I don't do something to change it, my tomorrows are going to look just like today, adrift in that damn rowboat.
Brenda Sue to the rescue again with one of her "Outside the Box" blogs. http://bsueboutiques.typepad.com/bsue_boutiques_jewelry_su/2011/12/its-time-to-start-planning-for-next-year.html She really got me thinking about next year and that I needed to get moving and make some plans. I thought about dumping my jewelry making and trying another hobby. BUT.....I've tried just about all the other crafts and in checking out new ones, didn't find anything that stirred my blood. I decided that I really like making jewelry, BUT....I have gotten way off course. I have been trying to please a lot of other people (potential buyers) and doing a lot of styles that really aren't me.
I have decided to make jewelry that pleases me. If no one likes it enough to buy it I will have enough jewelry to wear something different every day, and it will please me. I opened my Etsy shop again. There are only two pieces as of right now. One I was working on but is not me, the other, a pair of earrings, is me. The following picture is of a scarf pin that screams ME. I hope you like it, maybe its not you, but when you look at maybe you can see me.

The many faces of creating.
Again, it's been awhile, but I have been a busy creating. Not exactly jewelry, but creating none the same.
My daughter works for a local grocery chain. She gets called on to do some decorating a few times a year, Christmas is a prime season, they want WOW. This year they wanted WOW! with "sophistication" as the inspiration. She is the dreamer, always has been, and I am the production crew. You need both to achieve reality.
She brought home a statue of a deer with these words to me "this is what I see, it speaks to me." The statue is about 18 inches tall.
It needs to be large enough to appear to be pulling the sleigh, used for photos with Santa, sturdy, maybe plywood, shiny, bright and sparkly. Think "Walking in a Winter Wonderland" Now all I had to do was make her idea a reality. Isn't that what Mothers are for?
My first step was to scan the statue, to try to get scale size.
Then I drew a 1" square graph on the print. It needed to be about 5 1/2 foot high. With a lot of math skills, that I never thought I would use when they were cramming them in my head, I decided the graph on the 5 x 8 ft. sheet of plywood needed to be 3.5" squares. Now you just draw what you see in each 1" square onto the 3.5" square, after much adjusting, I arrived at my finished size. Them dreaming needed to become reality with the cutting, the sanding, the primer, the painting, the sparkle, and last by not least they needed "feet" to stand upright and be sturdy.

The background sucks but with the sun on it you can get an idea of the sparkle and the designs, and of course "the feet." There needed to be 3 of them. If you notice the ears, they are pieces of aluminum heated with my torch, curled with old round nosed pliers, slightly textured and shaped by hand. Tools of all kinds were used, from the workbench, and power tools, and tools from my workshop, each one has many uses and some of the best only do one thing, but do it well. I took 20 hours of work to make 3 deer.
This is the final grand design, everything white and silver and waiting for Santa. She even went the extra mile and got "real" snow, all topped with lots of sparkles, trees dressed in snow and sparkle and lights, snowflakes drifting down, presents all wrapped in silver and white, sleigh all decked out in boughs and ribbons just waiting for Santa and the children. "Walking in a Winter Wonderland" WOW!

Sari Ribbon Blog Hop
I can't believe I have not posted since August. That was right before Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee interrupted my life. Hopefully this Blog Hop will get me back into the swing of things. I have been commited to designing with what I have on hand instead of just ordering up a bunch of new stuff, that is the easy way, think of a design, order the stuff, put it together. My stash is overflowing becaue I always order more than I need, sure that I will use it, then put it in a safe place. Never to find it again.
First a picture of the finished product, which I am pleased with and my daughter claimed immediately because it is perfect for her new outfit.
The copper links I had made awhile ago and I new I wanted to hook them together for a necklace. The next was to chose a piece of ribbon. What I had were odd dark colors, they appear much lighter, my first instinct, order more, but I finally decided on the orange, it is fall.
After looking at it for 3 days, I started sorting thru my B'sue stash, found the leaves, the light bulb went on and the rest just fell right into place. I wish all projects were this successful.

Things that are running around in my brain
I have so many things going on, but none of them are enough for a blog. So although this kind of jumps all over the place, it's the things that are making me crazy.
Do any of you have a safe place? Not where you go when you are in danger, where you put things so that when you want them you will know where they are. That's the kind of person I am. The problem is I can never find this safe place when I want one of these items back. Whenever I find this safe place again it is going to be wondrous. It will have all of the important papers that I need, the bill I got just last week in the mail, and the order I got from B'sue 2 weeks ago, yep, a whole order gone. These are just the things that I have spent most of the days looking for since last I posted. I have tore the place apart, put some back together,(organized) that means I'll never see them again, and I still cannot find these 3 things. Subject 1 unfinished
I am in the act of buying a new lawn/garden tractor. We have had a John Deere for 35 years, but my mechanic tells me that I need to think about putting it in a retirement home before the maintenance becomes more than it is worth. At my age I kind of relate to that and wonder when I will reach this point and what will my family do with me. I know if my husband were still with us, he would be able to care for the ailing Johnny, and possibly would have corrected the problems before they escalated to this point. What I am going to do is put Johnny out to pasture like the good horse that he has been, we will give him a good bath and a shine on his hood. He will not need to do the very hard job of fall leaf clean-up, the new guy can do that. We will pull him out of the garage and let him watch and laugh. Subject 2 addressed
My inside home maintenance projects for this year are just about finished. All that is left is that "punch list". You know what that is, that list of things you didn't finish, the little details. Oh yeah everything looks pretty good until you look too close and then you see the missing details. Some say, oh so what, if anyone notices let them do it. The problem is I'm the only one that really notices, and it bugs me. I wish I could just look the other way, but it's just not who I am. Sometimes I find being me is a burden. Subject 3 still here
This, the blog part, out of the way. It is fun, it shouldn't be a commitment, but sometimes it is. Subject 4 done
Now the one I have really missed doing. Making my jewelry. This is the most bothersome of all, because it is the play part. "You can't play until you get your work done", Mom always said so. I grew up in the 40's and 50's, today's kids will never be tortured by this mantra. I did go play this morning, the tumbler is running, the glue is drying and the next project is all laid out. Now it's time to clean the bathroom, I played, now I have to get my work done. I kind of did it MY WAY today. Subject 5 working on it

Try, try again, and again
I promised pictures of first ideas of the necklace that I made for the Mostly Metal Blog Hop challenge. As you will be able to see I was fixated on one idea, I named it when I first started playing with the pieces. I wasn't willing to give up the idea, so I just kept digging the hole deeper. "Come on, let's fly"
First start, color, more color, and some weird ideas.
A little sari ribbon should do the job, with some off center dangles. hmmmmm This piece also had a sari ribbon background, covered with just a little too much Alcohol Inks and Guilders Paste. Somewhere along the way I trimmed back all the fringe from the ribbon, might tickle when you wear it. hmmmmmmmmm
It needs more ribbon, a different color, and the dangles on the other side. Yeah that's it. Love the propellers, they fit with new name "Fly Fly Away" Some green seed beads around the clock would give it some sparkle. Sure. And 2 extra wings to help the butterfly. Oh yeah, now were on the right track.
It probably had possibilities, but I was beyond seeing them. I am just going to drop out and tell Michelle, I will not be posting any pictures. My daughter's words, "it looks great, your too critical." What does she know, she is just saying that because she loves me. No pictures of the of this dismantling, I was too .frustrated. Words of wisdom, from daughter, "No more challenges, why do you do this too yourself." She left for work, I took the parts out of the garbage can, and started over. I will not be defeated, I can do this!
I learned something from the 2 challenges I have entered, know your competition, and how to find out a lot about yourself. You will be able to see the finished piece on the previous post, which has no name, except maybe the title of the picture "Final Design". I was pleased, and I guess that's what it all comes down to, if you are happy with what you make, because in the end, that is why we do it, to bring ourselves pleasure. If it brings pleasure to others, that's just a bonus. Life is Good.

Second dismantling, forgot to take pictures of first one. Then there is that pink cabochon that I didn't use. Oh well, you don't have to use everything.
There was some dismantling and color changing in here, that also was not photographed, I was too busy pulling my hair out.
Not ready to give up on that whole idea quite yet. Now we are going to have a destination to fly to. Still have the ribbons, just a different type. I knew those green seed beads would look great. Notice the pared down, simplistic look. Looks good, "Let's Fly".
Woke up the next morning, took one look at it, "oh my God, what was I thinking."It probably had possibilities, but I was beyond seeing them.

Mostly Metal Blog Hop
Today is the big reveal of the 18 people who joined the Mostly Metal Blog Hop. Some of the participants are friends from FB and I know their work well, (they are really really good) and I am humble just to be posting along side of them. Others I do not know and am not familiar with their work, but just doing a preview peek at their blogs and Etsy stores tells me that again, like I was with B'sue Five and Dime Challenge, I am out of my league. Why do you keep doing it, you ask? Well, each time I learn a little more. At least this time around I am smarter and did a lot of checking so I know what to expect. It is going to be amazing, if you follow the URL's and take a look you are going to see some outstanding designs.
Just to fill you in on the ground rules to this challenge, which sounded simple. Michelle Mach received a big Muse pack from B'sue Boutiques, which is loaded with lots and lots of stuff, and decided to have some fun. She made up 18 packages, broken down into 3 categories of 6 bags each. Each of the 6 bags in each category had all of the same items, but Michelle threw in a surprise from her own stash. I chose the Filigree Fun category, which in truth I thought would be easier. Again Man plans, God laughs, (one of my favorite and well used phrases). I actually tore the "thing" apart 4 times, the last time dismantling it completely and starting over again. My next post will have pictures of some of the disasters, I did not want to spoil all the beautiful designs you will see today with pics of my disasters.
Final Design
Michelle has added a little bonus for all of you who visit. When you leave a comment on any of our blogs you will be entered in a drawing for a free kit for the fall challenge.

Playing with a new patina
The last couple of days I have been playing with a new product, new to me anyway. It is a patina that comes in 12 different colors, called Sculpt Nouveau Patinas but sold under the name of miss fickle media on Etsy www.etsy.com/shop/misficklemedia. It is very economical to get started and requires no extra purchases, all tools are either in our jewelry workshops or around the house.
Typical of me, I scanned thru the directions, (which are delivered in a download, but I printed them out), and then started playing with the colors. I was not completely thrilled by the results, but I not so patiently waited for them to cure. Still not what I expected, so I went back and read the direction, oops missed a couple of steps. Next time I followed all directions, had the print out right next to me and worked step by step, and I am very happy with the results. Can't wait to use them in a piece, I have a cuff in mind, but I think that is another post.
First try by the book, done on B'sue Boutiques raw brass flowers and a couple items I made from copper and brass, just to see which works better. They have been sealed with a spray and they recommend a coat Renaissance wax, (which is on order from B'sue). I think my favorite so far is the Verdigris on the far left.

This shows the raw brass flowers after coloring, now the 24 hour wait begins. You can see how shiny they look but this is not so, the flash gave that appearance.
The progress to a finished cuff is still to come, stay tuned

Another Opinion on Pricing
I have been reading all of the posts on pricing, and I agree with all of them, because each one makes a valid point. Pricing your product is probably the most difficult part of the whole process. The good thing about it is, if you get it wrong you can change it.
Before I make any more observations, I think you should know a little about my background. At 18 years old I opened my own business, a beauty shop, as they called it 50 years ago. I operated this business for 35 years, retiring in 1994, mostly because I had carpel tunnel of my right hand which made working more painful than enjoyable. I have been one of the fortunate, I did what I loved and I enjoyed every day of it. I knew I wanted to be a beautician when I was 10 years old and spent my free time in the neighbors salon, cleaning perm rods and organizing the hair clips and bobby pins, and I was addicted to the smell of perm solution, still am really.
Selling jewelry is no different than selling any other product. As soon as that first person says "how much is it?" you are in business.
This is a business tip that I learned from "Wegman's Food Market". They are the absolute best at customer service. I worked there for 10 years and just retired in October of last year.
You probably think that when you say "thank you" they know what you are referring to, NO. When you thank them for their business they know they are appreciated.
Always believe there will be a next time, no matter where you are doing business. If it is not them, it may be someone they tell. Speaking of telling someone. An unhappy customer will tell 10 people about you, but a happy customer will only tell 3 people. These numbers are old, today they are much higher, I just am not certain of of the correct numbers. I do know that our broad base of communication makes it much easier to complain. People would rather complain than praise.
I know this is a long post. Business is business and once you learn the rules, it is much easier to play the game. I haved learned something new about business every day of my working life, this blog just goes to prove it. My grandson just walked by and said " I can't beleive my grandmother is blogging." If you want to play the game, you must play by the rules.

- Selling yourself is very important, because if they don't know YOU or like YOU they are not going to buy your jewelry.
-
-
- You need to be selling a product they like. If you are selling something just like the next person, it must be better. Better means perceived value.
- Use quality products and do quality work. Educate your customers about the products you use and why you use them. Don't say "because it is cheaper", they do not want to be thought of as cheap, even though they sometimes act that way.
- Be honest with your customers. They are not stupid. I you are less than honest it will come back to bite you. There is always someone else out there who is willing to educate them.
- Do fair pricing, no matter which method you use to calculate this price. The customer knows you must make a profit, but they are not going to buy if they feel they are being "taken over the coals."
- The most important thing to remember is to make the customer feel special, don't be afraid to give them something "extra", and then put it in an especially pretty package. This speaks well of you when someone else sees the package, and it makes the customer feel good about the purchase.
